What is Six Sigma?
Six sigma is a fine blend of Juran and Deming TQM philosophies. Six sigma is focused on reducing defects. Traditionally, six sigma corporate are focusing on measuring defects and meticulously eliminating them. Definition by Hill of AlliedSignal said, it is a customer focused continuous improvement strategy and discipline that minimizes defects and variation towards an achievement level of 3.4 defects per million opportunities in our product design, production and administrative processes. Six sigma is about the abatement of risk in everything a business does or delivers.
What is the methodology used in six sigma?
DMAIC methodology is used for problem solving approach.
- Define: In the define stage we understand the project precisely and the customer's problem statement
- Measure: In the measure stage we understand the status of the problem using data gathering techniques and by conducting measurement analysis
- Analysis: In this stage, we identify and analyze the root cause and help to stabilize the process by taking appropriate corrections or local actions
- Improve: In the improve stage we focus on improving the process capability and determine if we have met the target
- Control: Control stage is being more proactive and identifying risk mitigation plan so that we are interested to yield long term gain.
